Piercings for Minors
There are no age restrictions on piercings in the state of California. However, it is up to the discretion of the piercer and/or studio whether they want to pierce minors and at what age they draw the line. Insurance coverage for the procedure may also influence the age range.
Sacred Nine Tattoo Studio offers piercings to minors who can consent to the piercing and follow aftercare correctly. An infant cannot consent to body modification and therefore we cannot pierce them. Once a child is able to express an enthusiastic interest in having ear piercings, it is then an issue of whether or not they can follow the aftercare instructions. Typically that means keeping the piercings clean and not touching them throughout the day. Usually this age range is about five years old to twelve years old. Any minor under the age of thirteen may only receive earlobe piercings.
We are currently able to offer ear cartilage, nose, septum, lip, eyebrow, and navel piercings to minors aged 13-17 years old with a parents consent. We will not pierce a minors tongue, nipples, or below the belt. (Don’t even ask…that’s weird and gross.)
For all minors, the parent or legal guardian must be present and able to prove guardianship. Typically we ask for any form of ID that includes your photo, full name, and birthdate. A drivers license or state issued ID card are most common. A passport works as well. If the minor does not have one of the previously mentioned forms of ID then a school ID and birth certificate will work. If the parent and minors last names do not match we will need additional documentation to prove the relationship, such as a marriage certificate.
